1 努力读书 书读多了会飞的.(My beloved Grandmom)
Study Hard,
When you got lots and lots of knowledges, you can FLY.
My grandmother used to tell me that.
She had never go to school and knowing not a single word. I remember when I was young at early teenage she was very concern about our (my younger brother, sister and myself) school results. She always uttered 努力读书 书读多了会飞的. As a child, I didn't understand what she meant, until one day I realised she was actually hoping us to be able to fly on a plane to see the world, of which she was so much admiring to, and never have a chance to fly. To her, a farmer or without education, one has no chance of flying and seeing the world. (In 1960s flying in a plane was luxurious)
She put all her HOPE and DREAMS on us, the grandchildren.
During one of the school year end holidays, we were each given a blank execise book by her. She told us to complete the entire book with mathematic equations with correct answers, be it addition, substraction, division or multiplication, just anything in mathematic. "You just do it and complete the whole book, a gift will be given for a completed work" she said.
We were laughing at her back and thinking of just simply write and she can never know whether it's right or wrong, because she herself was illiterate. So by the end of the school holiday, we submitted to her with the book completed with the simpliest additions, like 1+1=2, etc, also with lots of mistakes. A gift (a little pack of "preserved dry orange skin", sour sweet, very nice) was immediately awarded. Wow! we were so happy, feeling of like "success in cheating", rather than glorious of being awarded. (So bad I was)
After two weeks past, we were called to her front again. Given back our work books, duly marked with lots of red-inked mistake marks in it. We were shocked and was feeling pretty much ashame of it. Oh NO, how come she can did it? She was illiterate !
She didn't scold us. Instead, she said "Child, next time do it right and don't cheat me. How was the gift I gave you, like it?" We were wordless and just looking at each other. I bet she knew best to handle our embarrassing situation at that moment. She left with a smile and reminding words "Learn from your mistakes and it's all for you, not me."
A few days after that, one of our elder cousin who was a teacher came and see us. He told us that our grandmum had not only requested him to help in the marking of our homeworks, she seeked his thorough comments of our works. She want to understand our homework performance completely !
In our memories, SHE WAS OUR GREATEST TEACHER. It was her concerns and caring on our education driving me to study hard later.
